Bringing the spirit of Zimbabwe, the lazy days of summer in Brighton and the grittiness of South London to their blend of African inspired, percussion and vintage synth led dance music on their eponymous debut release, Tendaji/Donje is a collaboration between old friends Anthony Donje & Vincent Tendaji.
After a trip fully immersing himself in the culture and nightlife of the music of Zimbabwe, Donje returned to the UK with a bag full of records and head full of ideas. Simultaneously Tendaji had been keeping a watchful eye and ear on dance floors while playing percussion for a whole host of bands at UK music festivals.
When the pair headed to the studio the goal was to create a mix of their favourite aspects of both African and UK dance music. They captured the essence of afro and the feel good vibes of electronic music, using vintage synths, guitars and live percussion.
The pair bounced ideas back and forth from their South Coast and South London studios, adding parts remotely, sending ideas as nice surprises via emails, before finally coming together to mix the record.
The final touch was to add vocals from special guests - the legendary Noisettes lead singer Shingai Shoniwa on “Akio” and spoken word artist Karen Gibson Roc on “Empty Space” and “Simple Times”.
